Leonard was so pissed he abandoned his game plan and tried to brawl Durán, which led to him losing. If the only reason you want to beat your opponent is because you want to cause them pain, you're a shitty person and probably gonna make a shitty boxer.Īnd to further echo u/AerialSnack, Roberto Durán got inside Sugar Ray Leonard's head before their first match by insulting him endlessly. That's one of the reasons Gedo pissed off Ippo so much, because he didn't put the same respect into matches that his opponents clearly were. Boxers shouldn't be angry at their opponents, they should be putting in everything they have in order to defeat them. What Kamogawa was happy about was that Ippo realized this on his own.Īdditionally, Ippo doesn't need anger, he just needs a drive to win.
Ippo didn't box in that match, he just threw an angry punch at someone he was mad at no technique, no respect, no boxer's mentality at all. The coach definitely wasn't happy with the way Ippo fought Kojima. Maybe the coach thinks that Ippo + anger won't go out well. In the end this could both be a positive and negative thing for Ippo. So in the end the coach's teachings also formed Ippo's neutral mentality towards his opponents besides his own personality.īut doesn't Ippo need a little anger? I get what the coach fears, because Ippo could have almost lost the match against Kojima, but Takamura is also reckless as hell and for him it works (maybe you can't compare Ippo to Takamura since Taka is the strongest). Even though he is secretly happy when Ippo decimates his opponents (like with Kojima) he tries to get this mentality out of his head. So I noticed that when Ippo rarely uses his anger for boxing the coach always scolds him and says that it's not the right way to go into the match with these kind of feelings.
